Sossusvlei is located in the southern Namib Desert within Namib-Naukluft National Park and is one of Namibia's most recognisable landscapes. The area is known for its towering red sand dunes, stark desert scenery and ancient clay pans surrounded by some of the oldest dunes in the world.

The landscape includes Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and the surrounding dune fields, with dunes rising to more than 300 metres in places. The dry pans and dunes create a striking contrast of colour and form, while the wider desert supports specially adapted plants, reptiles, insects and mammals, including oryx and springbok.

Activities include guided or self-drive excursions to the pans, dune climbing, photography and exploring the surrounding desert landscape. Sesriem Canyon, formed by the Tsauchab River, is another notable feature in the area, while sunrise and sunset provide changing light across the dunes.
