The Maasai Mara National Reserve is located in south-western Kenya along the Tanzanian border and forms the northern extension of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The reserve covers approximately 1,500 square kilometres and is known for its open grasslands, high concentration of wildlife and role in the annual wildebeest migration.

The Mara River and surrounding plains support large populations of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, alongside lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hyena and other plains game. The area is also home to a rich diversity of birdlife. The annual migration typically reaches the Mara between July and October, although wildlife is resident throughout the year and the timing of the migration varies.

Beyond the national reserve are a number of private conservancies, including Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho and Ol Kinyei. These conservancies extend the wider wildlife landscape beyond the reserve and provide important habitat and wildlife corridors. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, night drives and cultural visits, with activities varying between the reserve and individual conservancies.
