Livingstone is located in southern Zambia on the northern bank of the Zambezi River, close to Victoria Falls and the border with Zimbabwe. Named after explorer David Livingstone, the city is Zambia's main gateway to the falls and an important centre for tourism in the upper Zambezi Valley.

The city has a strong colonial and exploration history, with the Livingstone Museum providing insight into Zambia's archaeology, history, ethnography and connection to David Livingstone. Markets, craft outlets and local cultural experiences provide opportunities to experience contemporary Zambian life, while the Zambezi River supports a range of water-based activities.

Livingstone is also a base for exploring the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, with activities including river cruises, canoeing, fishing, walking and scenic flights. The surrounding area includes riverine woodland and wildlife habitats, with Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park providing opportunities for wildlife viewing close to the city.
