Lake Malawi is located in eastern Malawi and forms one of Africa's Great Lakes, extending for approximately 580 kilometres along the country's eastern border. The lake is known for its clear waters, sandy beaches, mountainous surroundings and exceptional diversity of freshwater fish.

The shoreline varies from broad sandy beaches and rocky headlands to forested hills and small fishing villages. The lake supports a variety of waterbirds and is particularly important for its numerous species of cichlid fish, many of which are found nowhere else. The surrounding landscapes include mountains, woodland and cultivated areas.

Likoma Island lies in the northern part of the lake, close to the Mozambican shore but within Malawi. The island is known for its beaches, rocky shoreline, clear waters and relaxed atmosphere, with opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, diving, kayaking and boating. Activities around the lake also include fishing, birdwatching and exploring local villages and communities.
