Meet the Team - Derek & Sarah Solomon

Derek Solomon has been leading special interest safaris in Southern Africa for over 20 years. Originally based in Harare in Zimbabwe, he and his wife Sarah worked as a team taking mobile safaris into remote destinations around Zimbabwe and then changed the focus to fly-in safaris to select destinations in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. Then in 2003 they moved up to Zambia and are now based in Mfuwe where Derek works as a specialist guide with The Bushcamp Company.

Derek is regarded as one of the leading ornithologists in the sub-region and has published several books on bird identification and behaviour. In conjunction with the local Wildlife Authority ecologist he is conducting a survey of the birds and amphibians of the South Luangwa National Park, and is also busy with a study on hippo behaviour including underwater communication in that species. He has an avid interest in animal behaviour and has recently published a book on behaviour of the mammals of South Luangwa. A major part of his behaviour studies focus on communication and he spends much of his spare time recording calls of the birds, mammals and amphibians of the area. He has also recently released his first CD of Luangwa animal sounds.
