Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge is built on the most stunning spot in the vast and splendid South Luangwa National Park. Home to probably the highest concentration of hippos in the world, South Luangwa also has huge prides of lions, a great many leopards, and elephants by the hundred. South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris, which allow guests a chance to savour the smells and signs of the bush with armed game scouts and Sanctuary’s expert guides. The hilltop lodge was built for Kenneth Kaunda, the former president of Zambia, in the 1970s. Sanctuary Retreats has retained the property’s original colonial style, and outside the grand dining room a long veranda stretches with views down the valley to the Luangwa River itself. On warm evenings, dinner is served outside near roaring fires that add to the luxurious ambience and take the chill out of the air. Dinner is often accompanied by the grunt of lions or the saw of leopards in the wooded valleys that surround the lodge. ACCOMMODATION Each of the ten suites at Sanctuary Chichele comes complete with a four-poster bed, air conditioning, luxurious bathroom and every amenity guests could wish for – all in the middle of theAfrican bush.As with the rest of the lodge, the guest suites are decorated in an understated and elegantVictorian style.Watching the sun rise over the LuangwaValley from a private suite is a rare privilege and well worth getting up early for. |
